In harness racing a Standardbred horse races at a trot or a pace while pulling a lightweight two-wheeled cart called a sulky, with the driver seated behind rather than mounted. It is the form of horse racing historically tied to American agricultural fairgrounds, which is why so many fair tracks are half-mile ovals with a grandstand along the straight. Goshen, in Orange County, is the New York venue most closely associated with the sport.
